What Happens When You Do A Colonic

Most people feel a bit nervous before their first colonic, and that’s completely normal. But here’s the funny thing: once they’ve had one, they usually book their next on the spot. There’s really nothing to worry about. In fact, you should feel proud for prioritising your gut health. Still, walking into your appointment with a good idea of what to expect makes everything feel a whole lot easier. So, let’s break the process down.

The four steps during a colonic

Step 1. The first thing you’ll do is fill out an intake form and have a conversation with your therapist. They’ll ask about your health history, your lifestyle, and any specific detox goals you might have. This is a great time to ask questions (no such thing as a silly one!) and get comfortable with the process. You don’t have to share anything you don’t want to, but the more they know, the better they can support you.

Step 2: Next, your therapist will leave the room so you can get ready. You’ll lie on a treatment bed with a towel covering you, and once you’re settled, they’ll come back in and gently guide you through the setup. There’s a quick moment lying on your side for the insertion, then you’ll roll onto your back with your knees slightly bent. Don’t worry, you’re covered the whole time and your privacy is completely respected.

Step 3: Warm, filtered water is gently introduced into the colon and flows in and out in a continuous cycle. This process helps loosen and flush out old waste and toxins. You’ll feel some gentle pressure, but it’s not painful. And as your therapist massages your stomach, you’ll start to wonder why you don’t do this every week. Your therapist will guide you through the session, explain what’s happening, and yes, you can even watch the waste being released (weirdly fascinating, honestly). The whole process takes about 45 minutes.

Step 4. When it’s all done, the speculum is carefully removed, and your therapist will leave the room so you can head to the toilet to let gravity finish the job. After you’ve changed, your therapist will check in with you, discuss how it went, and recommend any next steps or follow-up treatments if needed.

The bottom line (pun intended)

A colonic is nothing to fear. It’s just a powerful way to support your body and feel lighter, clearer, and more energised. Like anything new, the unknown can be intimidating, but once you’ve done it, you’ll wonder what all the fuss was about. Gut health is so important, and the more attention we pay to it, the better we’ll feel. You’ll leave your appointment with a renewed respect for your body and a goal for good gut health.
