5-Ways-To-Support-Your-Constipation-At-Home

Constipation might be common, but that doesn’t mean it’s not frustrating. Constipation occurs when your digestive system slows down, making it difficult, and often painful, to pass stool. As waste lingers in the large intestine, it loses more and more water, eventually becoming dry, hard, and tough to move. The longer it stays, the harder it gets, quite literally, leading to strain, discomfort, and frustration.

There’s no single cause for constipation. It can be triggered by not drinking enough water, a lack of physical activity, or a diet low in fibre. But that’s just the beginning. Food sensitivities, medications (especially painkillers), stress, and even intestinal parasites can throw your gut off balance.

You’re not alone!

Colonics are great for constipation. During a closed system colonic, a trained therapist inserts a tube into the rectum through which warm water is infused into the colon. The water flows in and out continuously, helping to flush out waste material and toxins from the colon. A colonic helps relieve constipation, gas, and bloating while improving digestion, metabolism, and nutrient absorption.

If it was possible, we’d suggest weekly colonics for those struggling with constipation. But that’s not feasible for everyone. So, in between your colonic session, what can you do to support your constipation at home?

5 ways to support your constipation at home

Eat well. Constipation can sometimes be caused by a poor, inflammatory or low fibre diet. Even if this isn’t the cause, certain foods can make it worse. Processed foods are low in fibre, which can lead to digestive issues like mucus buildup, acidity, and inflammation. To support gut health, eat more fibre-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, natural whole-grains and nuts. Increase fibre gradually to avoid bloating and give your body time to adjust.

Move your body. Movement is so important. Unfortunately, most of us lead quite sedentary lifestyles, causing our bodies to not work the way they should. Exercise stimulates the gut, which helps the stool move through the digestive system. And don’t worry if you can’t fit in a trip to the gym each day. Simply concentrate on movement, whether that’s a brisk walk at lunch time, or getting up every hour to stretch.

Look for ways to manage your stress. Emotional stress and traumatic events may disrupt normal bowel function, leading to constipation. And the more constipated you are, the more stressed you feel. While it’s not always easy to get rid of stress completely, it’s important to find ways to lower your stress levels to help the body work more effectively. We love the Happy Mind Tea which contains stress relieving herbs, and other adaptogenic tonics.

Take ConstaClear. Laxatives can have an irritating and dehydrating effect on the bowel. As a natural high strength magnesium oxide supplement, ConstaClear is much gentler on the body and works a lot faster, which are two things the body needs when looking for relief. Simply take your capsules before bed and have your bowel movement when you wake up! It softens the stools and helps keep your regular at home or while you travel with little to no effort.

Try an enema. A water or coffee enema offers a safe and effective solution for immediate constipation relief at home. Like a mini colonic you can do anywhere, an enema helps to stimulate evacuation from the lower colon. This simple ancient procedure can be done at home and involves introducing warm water or coffee into the colon through the rectum using an enema kit, helping to stimulate bowel movements and alleviate constipation. The kit is small enough to take on your travels, too, which means no more feeling constipated when you’re away from home. It will not cleanse as deeply as a colonic however it is a great way to support bowel movements at home.
