What is a colonic?

Colon Hydrotherapy, also known as “colonics” or “colonic irrigation,” is a gentle and natural way to flush out built-up toxins and waste from the colon. It involves safely rinsing the colon with warm water through the rectum to support detoxification and overall digestive health. The average person may be holding 5-7 kilos of waste in the colon,

What will my first session be like?

Your therapist will review your health goals and history, explain the process, and answer questions. During the session, you'll be covered for privacy while water gently flows in and out of your colon. You'll see what’s released through a viewing tube, and your therapist will explain it. Afterward, you’ll use the toilet, get dressed, and receive a probiotic drink, recap and recommendations.

How will I feel after the colonic?

Most clients feel lighter, more relaxed, and less bloated after a colonic, but it’s important to remember that deep cleansing takes time and varies from person to person.

If it’s your first session, know that lasting results typically require 3–5+ treatments. The colon is around 2 meters long and can hold 5–7 kilos of waste, so one session won’t clear it all. It’s normal to feel bloated after your first enema as your body has absorbed a lot of water and stirred up a lot of toxicity that has not yet been released. Back-to-back sessions, or sessions close together, are the best option.

Once the colon is clear you should feel light, energised and have a soft, comfortable belly.

What should I wear?

Wear comfy clothes that can be removed from the waist down. You’ll be covered with a towel and blanket during the treatment.

Do I need a colonic if I go to the toilet daily?

Yes. Even with regular bowel movements, environmental toxins can build up. Colonics help flush these out and support overall detox, including liver, kidneys, and bloodstream.

Can I go to work or sport after my colonic?

Yes. Most releases happen at the clinic. If it’s your first time, plan to relax afterward as your body may continue detoxing.

Can I have a colonic while on my period?

Absolutely. It’s a great time to support your body’s natural detox and ease bloating or fatigue.

Can I have colonics during pregnancy?

Possibly, especially in the second trimester or if severely constipated. Contact us to discuss your options and safety.

Can I eat before and after my colonic?

Fasting for 2-4 hours is ideal but not required. An empty stomach usually makes the session more comfortable. Once you’re done with the colonic, skip greasy, sugary, or heavy foods. Drink water, take a probiotic, and rest if needed.

Will colonics make my bowel lazy?

No. Colonics improve muscle tone and bowel function, which means you can have them as often as you like.

Can you do a colonic to help prep for a colonoscopy?

You sure can! The natural alternative we offer here at Bayside Colonic is based on the Shea’s Way Protocol and includes a series of three Colon Hydrotherapy sessions over a three-day period, with the last session completed on the morning of your Colonoscopy procedure. This method involves no laxatives and is a much safer and less harmful way to completely detoxify the colon.

Can everyone do a colonic?

A contraindication is any symptom or condition that makes it inadvisable to use a particular therapy. Please contact us if you believe you have a contraindication. We will help clarify your situation and ensure that your next step is a solid one! Click here to find out more.
