The Origins of the Ancient Practice of Colon Hydrotherapy

Colon Hydrotherapy may just be resurfacing in the public eye, however did you know that this powerful cleansing therapy has actually been around for thousands of years? Dating back to the ancient Egyptians in 1500 BCE, It is certainly nothing new under the sun!

Colonic irrigation has been used for 1000’s of years to help people with their health.

In 1873, Georg Ebers (1873-1898), a German Egyptologist and novelist, discovered an Egyptian medical document called the “Ebers Papyrus”. This document is well preserved and describes colon hydrotherapy and cleansing via the rectum, it depicts how Egyptians employed enemas and various purgatives to induce bowel movements.

The practice of cleansing the bowel is mentioned in Egyptian mythology as well. The frequent use of enema’s was also described by Herodotus, a Greek historian. He wrote:

“The Egyptians clean themselves on three consecutive days every month, seeking after health with enema’s, for they think that all disease comes to man from his food”.

Inscriptions on Babylonian and Assyrian tablets also speak of the use of enema’s.

Ancient texts dating back to the third or fourth century A.D., which contain the original concepts of Ayurvedic medicine, describe the use of syringes as well as a speculum with which to cleanse the colon.

Even in western society enema’s were used frequently in hospitals, and enema buckets and bags were a pretty common item in most of our great grandmother’s bathroom cupboard.

Alas, the prescription of laxatives took over, as it was cheaper and easier to administer. So by the mid 60’s most devices disappeared from hospitals, and with it, the public’s knowledge regarding enema’s and colonics. However, convenience always comes at a price and as laxatives took over, people are now faced with side effects created from these inflammatory and toxic pharmaceutical and the reliance they create in the bowel.

Fortunately, our culture is reawakening to the subject of colon health and Colon Hydrotherapy is now used again by many who are looking for ways to detox and increase their health and well-being!
